St. Richard's School was the first school in the state to pilot and then to partner with the Center on Philanthropy's Learning To Give project (2003). Learning To Give, An Action of the Heart, A Project of the Mind, is a program that teaches voluntary action for the common good. A program of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and Youth Philanthropic Initiatives of Indiana (YPII), Learning To Give is designed to 1) educate youth about philanthropy and the importance of giving their time, talent and treasure for the common good (knowledge); 2) develop philanthropic behavior and experience (skills); and 3) empower youth to take voluntary citizen actions for the common good in their classrooms, their lives, and their communities (behavior). Each grade level, Pre-K 3-8, participates in two projects each academic year, one including a service-learning project. The program is curriculum based and teachers use the Lesson Plan Search Engine to find ideas and materials as well as create their own. You can learn more through the website: www.learningtogive.org.
As of September 15, 2006, Learning to Give has merged with The LEAGUE to create a model that combines curriculum, philanthropy, and service in an innovative way. The LEAGUE is a school-based worldwide "league for doing good" through which K-12 youth participate in serving their communities and learning about philanthropy. The LEAGUE infuses Learning to Give philanthropy lessons into schools while wrapping the lessons and activities in a sports metaphor--a LEAGUE with teams, players, coaches, points, events and recognition for individual students as well as teachers, administrators, schools, and communities.
Teacher Andrea Neal will serve as St. Richard's "coach." Carolyn Lausch, who is on the LEAGUE Advisory Board for the state of Indiana, will serve as her assistant. Both Neal and Lausch have been trained in what the merge means and will present an in-service to teachers on October 10th.
